A tribute to the 74,187 Indian Army combatants who lost their lives in the First World War, the Third Anglo-Afghan War, Gallipoli, Mesopotamia, Persia, East Africa, and other locations in the Near and Far East between 1914 and 1921. The gate is etched with the names of 13,300 personnel, including some British soldiers and officers. Sir Edwin Lutyens' gate design is reminiscent of the triumphal arches of ancient Rome, such the Arch of Constantine, and the memorial arches of subsequent times.
